St. Joseph County is the latest to balk at joining a multi-county consortium trying to lease the Indiana Toll Road.

The St. Joseph County Commissioners on Thursday rejected joining Lake and LaPorte counties in the consortium, the South Bend Tribune reported.

Commissioner Andy Kostielney said there's too many questions about the condition of the highway, the makeup of the proposed consortium and the nature of its power structure for him to feel comfortable spending taxpayer money. He didn't rule out joining such a consortium later.

Elkhart and LaGrange counties also rejected joining the consortium.

Each county joining the consortium was being asked to provide $10,000 for a preliminary bid on the toll road lease. Bids were due Thursday.

The private consortium that leased the toll road has declared bankruptcy.
