Athletic director Barry Collier made the announcement Friday.
Holtmann replaces Brandon Miller, who took a medical leave in October. The school still has not said why Miller left, citing privacy concerns. Miller had been promoted from assistant coach to head coach in July 2013 after Brad Stevens took the Boston Celtics' head coaching job.
Under Holtmann, the Bulldogs have gone 10-4 (0-1 Big East) and climbed as high as No. 15 in the rankings.
Holtmann joined Miller's staff last season after spending the previous three seasons at Gardner-Webb, where he led the Runnin' Bulldogs to 21 wins, a Division I school record, and was the Big South coach of the year in 2012-13.
