Now we have state Sen. Scott Schneider’s “religious freedom bill” looming over us. Schneider says his bill is meant to “shore up gaps in Indiana’s ‘religious liberty framework.’” He also says that “no one will be discriminated against by this bill.”
On the other hand, Micah Clark, director of the American Family Association of Indiana, said that this bill “would allow small businesses … to refuse services to gay couples based on the owner’s religious beliefs. It would also allow adoption agencies to refuse to place children with same-sex couples.”
This seems somewhat contradictory. While Schneider claims that no one will be discriminated against, Clark says the bill would allow businesses to refuse service to LGBT customers.
I have some questions for Schneider. Exactly what religious liberties are you being denied? Why are you proposing this bill now? Why not last year or the year before?
Schneider may think he’s pulling the wool over our eyes, but Hoosiers are not that stupid. I, for one, will not patronize any business that denies service to anyone, whether they’re gay, African-American, Jewish, short of stature or with green eyes.
