Hamilton County firefighters battled a major blaze Tuesday morning that tore through a $35 million apartment complex that's under construction in Fishers at State Road 37 and 131st Street.

Fourteen fire department units were called to the fire that was reported just before 5 a.m. at the Flats at Fishers Marketplace apartments. The fire was still burning more than three hours later.

Fire officials say no one yet lives in the cluster of three buildings that were being developed on 18 acres next to Fishers Junior High School and adjacent to a retail complex that includes a Walmart Neighborhood Market, a Lake City Bank and numerous restaurants.

The 306-unit apartment complex is being developed by Cincinnati-based Ackermann Group. Some tenants were expected to begin moving in later this month. The complex contains one-, two- and three-bedroom units ranging from 642 to 1,346 square feet with monthly rents from $763 to $1,345.

An official from Ackermann did not immediately respond to a phone message left Tuesday morning.

Fishers Fire Department Capt. John Mehling told WTHR-TV that firefighters had some trouble accessing the fire because the structures are still under construction.

He said winds also were stoking the fire, which continued to smolder and flare up hours after it started.
