In 2014, 82 deals were announced, down from the 88 reported in 2013, according to suburban Philadelphia legal consultancy Altman Weil. Last year’s number, however, still is the second-highest reported by Altman in the eight years it’s been compiling the data.
Most of the firms acquired were quite small. Of the total number of deals, 87 percent involved the purchase of firms with 20 or fewer lawyers, Altman said.
Indiana’s only reported combination by Altman fell into this category: Charleston, West Virginia, firm Jackson Kelly acquired Rudolph Fine Porter & Johnson in Evansville. The Indiana firm’s 20 attorneys began practicing under the Jackson Kelly name in the summer.
