The company told The Times of Munster on Friday that it would idle its Indiana Harbor Long Carbon facility March 1 and shut down its rolling mill in the next three months. Both facilities are in East Chicago.
The Luxembourg-based company said the 114-year-old mill, which makes steel bars, has lost money since 2011. It was shut down temporarily in 2009 but reopened in 2010.
ArcelorMittal said it would try to relocate 246 United Steelworkers union members and 58 salaried employees to other facilities in northwest Indiana.
The news follows last week’s announcement by Pittsburgh-based U.S. Steel that it would idle its East Chicago Tin plant for an undetermined time, laying off 369 workers.
