Caterpillar also plans to implement an unspecified number of “rolling layoffs,” or furloughs, during the remainder of the year, the company told the newspaper in a statement.
The 141 layoffs will begin July 31. The company previously announced that it would lay off 439 of its nearly 1,900 workers in Lafayette, effective May 29.
The steps are “in response to the current global recession, and in order to bring production levels and costs in line with demand,” Caterpillar said in the statement. “Depending on business conditions, more layoffs and separations may be required as the year unfolds.”
The company said the use of rolling layoffs “is intended to reduce the number of employees impacted by indefinite layoffs.”
