GM poised to reveal big investment at Fort Wayne-area plant

Gov. Mike Pence is scheduled to join General Motors Corp. executives in northeast Indiana for what his office is describing as a significant announcement.

GM previously said it was considering upgrading its truck assembly plant about 15 miles southwest of Fort Wayne to build its next generation of pickup trucks. The Allen County Council voted in October to approve a 10-year tax abatement that would save GM more than $15 million on a possible $1 billion investment in equipment and related improvements.

GM employs about 4,000 people at the plant in Roanoke, where Chevrolet Silverado and GMC Sierra pickups are assembled. Plant officials previously have said the upgrade wouldn't mean more jobs but would provide job security for those at the plant.

The announcement is scheduled for Tuesday afternoon.
