Traffic was being diverted from northbound I-65 onto U.S. 52 at Lebanon for a detour taking drivers north of Lafayette. Highway officials said the bridge over Wildcat Creek is expected to reopen Thursday.
Highway department spokeswoman Debbie Calder old WLFI-TV in Lafayette that some bearings that help relieve pressure on the bridge apparently fell out during ongoing road construction in the area. The department said workers saw "unusual movements" in the bridge and investigated further.
WTHR-TV in Indianapolis reported the last inspection of the northbound bridge from the U.S. Department of Transportation in 2012 rated its supports in poor condition and the section that supports traffic in fair condition.
