A Republican state legislator is resigning his seat a year after winning a re-election campaign that cost nearly $500,000.

Rep. Matt Ubelhor of Bloomfield announced Monday he was resigning from the Indiana House effective Dec. 1 to focus on business opportunities.

Ubelhor was first elected in 2010 and represented District 62, which covers parts of Greene, Monroe, Martin and Daviess counties in rural southwestern Indiana.

Ubelhor was the operations manager of a Peabody Energy coal mine that closed in 2014, the Herald-Times of Bloomington reported. He won re-election last year with 55 percent of the vote after a campaign that included ads on Indianapolis television stations for Ubelhor and his Democratic opponent.

Republican committeemen will select someone to complete Ubelhor's term, which ends with the 2016 election.
