Subscribe NowAuthorities in Madison say a fire that heavily damaged the 154-year-old Jefferson County Courthouse last month was accidental. Investigators said today that a contractor who was soldering two sections of pipe accidentally started the fire in a wooden part of the roof. The May 20 fire destroyed the courthouse’s dome-topped bell tower. A county official said the southeastern Indiana county intends to rebuild the courthouse, which sits at the center of the city about 40 miles northeast of Louisville.
