As is the custom for the last column of the year, I present to you a puzzle. It’s called Spelling Bee. Spelling Bee, invented by New York Times Crossword Editor Will Shortz, has been a popular feature to the Sunday New York Times magazine puzzle section for quite some time. It is the first thing I turn to on Sunday when I’m ready to sit down and enjoy matching wits with Shortz and his cadre of puzzle mavens. Here is my version:
Spelling Bee
How many common words of five or more letters can you spell using the letters in the hive? Every answer must use the center letter at least once and not end in “ing.” Letters may be reused in a word. At least one word will use all seven letters. Proper names and hyphenated words are not allowed. Neither are rarely used words, including appanage and gentian. Score 1 point for each answer and 3 points for a word that uses all 7 letters.
Rating: 10=good; 15=excellent; 20=genius
