Pence [Pence’s brand of Christianity repels me, Feb. 1]. Growing up in southern Illinois south of the Mason-Dixon line, I empathize with the discrimination issues that the LGBT community has faced and is facing.
As Jews in the 1950s, my family was unable to join the country club, the Elks club, etc. I attended segregated schools until the 4th grade and even our theaters had a line for the delineation for whites and “coloreds.” So I approach all this with a real sense of concern and care.
There are at least two descriptive words and phrases that will not appear in the governor’s CV. One is “caring” and the other is a wonderful Yiddish phrase “gutte neshuma”—a mensch among mensches.
He and his religious theories have lost the high road to civility and what is good for Indiana. If you look at his district when he was in Congress, the only way he managed to make it to Washington was the gerrymandering of his district around the city of Columbus.
I am mindful of Sen. Lloyd Bentsen’s debate statement to another brilliant Hoosier, Dan Quayle. “You’re no Jack Kennedy.” Pence is certainly no Mitch Daniels.
