Gov. Mike Pence has reappointed Carol Stephan as chairwoman of the Indiana Utility Regulatory Commission, the state agency that approves utility rates for millions of homes and businesses.

On Feb. 2, Pence said Stephan has “deep understanding and commitment to the commission’s work.”

The IURC regulates $14 billion worth of electric, natural gas, telecommunications, steam, water and sewer utilities.

The agency is now presiding over several high-profile cases, including a petition by Indianapolis Power & Light Co. to raise rates, allowing it to collect an additional $67.7 million a year.

Stephan is the first female chair of the commission. She succeeds Jim Atterholt, the previous chairman, who resigned in 2014 to become Pence’s chief of staff.

Before being promoted, Stephan had been a voting member of the five-member commission for only two months. She previously was assistant general counsel of the IURC for several years, and had also held administrative positions at the Indiana Office of Utility Consumer Counselor, the Indiana Department of Workforce Development and the Attorney General’s Office.•
