The Oregon Legislature is considering a bill that aims to rid the state of electricity from coal-fired plants by 2030, according to a story in The Oregonian.
The bill has been praised by environmentalists and renewable-energy advocates. It has also been blessed by utilities.
The chief sponsor is Rep. Jessica Vega Pederson, a Portland Democrat and a former political chairwoman of the Sierra Club.
The local connection: Pederson is originally from Crown Point. According to her official biography, her father worked in the steel industry. Her husband, Aaron, owns a small business.•
