The Indiana Senate has approved legislation that would keep state government running if lawmakers don’t enact a new budget by the time the current spending plan expires at the end of the month.
The bill approved today would allow the administration of Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels to continue spending at current levels if the new budget isn’t passed on time.
The stopgap bill passed the Republican-ruled Senate mostly along party lines.
Republican backers call it simply a fail-safe proposal. But outnumbered Democrats in the Senate and those who control the House say it is premature and will take pressure off budget negotiations during the special session.
