The firm announced today it would absorb 22 lawyers at The Parsinen Law Firm PA in a deal that takes effect July 1. It is the third out-of-state law office Barnes & Thornburg has opened or acquired this year.
The firm in April entered the Atlanta market by recruiting two former partners in the Atlanta office of St. Louis-based Bryan Cave Powell Goldstein. Later the same month, it expanded into Columbus, Ohio, by bringing on a partner from Squire Sanders & Dempsey LLP in Columbus.
With the three new locations, Barnes & Thornburg now has 10 offices and about 475 lawyers nationwide, ranking it among the 100 largest law firms in the country, according to National Law Journal.
In acquiring the Minneapolis firm, Barnes & Thornburg Managing Partner Alan A. Levin said the city is critical to growing its national presence.
“As one of the leading business and financial centers of the Midwest, Minneapolis has long been recognized as a strategic market for us, and the Parsinen firm provides an excellent base for us to build a diverse practice,” he said in a prepared statement.
Parsinen opened in 1981 and has been profitable every year, Managing Partner Howard Rubin said. The firm, however, is “looking for more breadth” to offer its clients.
Nationally, law firm mergers are on the rise, as firms look to add more talent and offices to stay competitive. In the first quarter of this year, 33 mergers were completed, compared with 22 during the same time in 2008, according to New Jersey-based legal consultancy Hildebrandt.
Besides Indianapolis, Barnes & Thornburg has Indiana offices in Elkhart, Fort Wayne and South Bend. Other locations are in Chicago; Grand Rapids, Mich.; and Washington, D.C.
