Indiana House and Senate fiscal leaders are set to begin serious negotiations on a new state budget.

Senate Republicans passed their version of a budget yesterday, setting the stage for House-Senate conference committee negotiations to begin during a public meeting scheduled for this morning.

House Ways and Means Chairman William Crawford says he hopes the committee will work through the weekend and come up with a budget agreement by Monday.

Republican Gov. Mitch Daniels says he could sign a version of the budget passed by Senate Republicans, but Daniels and fellow GOP lawmakers are at odds with Democrats who control the House. The current budget expires at midnight on June 30.

Meanwhile, Daniels is traveling in the southern part of the state to talk about the special legislative session and negotiations the budget. Daniels will visit Terre Haute and Evansville today, and will go to New Albany, Madison and Lawrenceburg tomorrow.

The special session began June 11 after lawmakers didn’t pass a budget in the regular session that ended in April.
