A budget passed by the Democrat-led House would give local school
boards the authority to reject charter schools in areas that already
have many charters, which are public schools free of certain state
regulations.
But a budget being considered this week by the GOP-led Senate includes
no new charter-school regulations. Senate Republicans also want a pilot
program for so-called “virtual” charter schools, where students take
most instruction online. Opponents say virtual charter schools simply
amount to home schooling at taxpayer expense.
Lawmakers are working to create a budget before the current one expires June 30.
