Rossi's winnings included a $50,000 bonus from Sunoco for being the top rookie in the race. The overall purse for the 33 drivers was $13,273,253.
Rossi stretched his fuel mileage for the final 90 miles to score an upset victory. The American is the first rookie to win since Helio Castroneves in 2001 and the first American-born rookie to win since Louis Meyer in 1928.
Carlos Munoz was runner-up for the second time in four years and earned $788,743.
Third-place finisher Josef Newgarden earned $574,243. Defending race winner Juan Pablo Montoya finished last, but pocketed $339,493.
