The seller was Thompson, Hall & Jordan Funeral Homes in Cincinnati. Terms of the acquisition, which closed Wednesday, were not disclosed.
Flanner and Buchanan said the entire 16-employee staff at Lavenia & Summers would be retained, including General Manager George Brown and Funeral Director Natalie Summers-Henson. The home will continue to operate under the same name at 5811 E. 38th St.
Lavenia & Summers was formed in 2002 through the merger of two Indianapolis funeral homes: Lavenia’s Home for Funerals, which was founded in 1987 by the late Lavenia B. Jacobs; and Summers Funeral Chapel, which was founded in 1962 by the late Joseph W. Summers.
Flanner and Buchanan, founded in 1881, is a fourth-generation family-owned company with 300 staff members and 15 funeral centers in the Indianapolis area.
“Now in our 135th anniversary year, this is a great opportunity to continue Flanner and Buchanan’s mission to help improve our community,” owner Bruce Buchanan said in a written statement. “We will now focus on the iconic East 38th Street location with plans for many upgrades to the building, including new service amenities.”
