Union officials say that the layoffs that took effect yesterday leave only 37 employees at the Columbus plant. Nearly 200 people worked at the factory when Fort Smith, Ark.-based Baldor bought it in 2006.
Baldor announced the Columbus layoffs in April, saying that it planned to streamline operations since some product lines were made at more than one location.
The company, which makes electric motors and speed drives, said it would like to sell the Columbus factory.
