When the position of chief financial officer came open at Emmis Communications and Cheryl Ackerman didn’t want to apply, she knew it was time to look elsewhere and do something other than finance. Ackerman left Emmis, then spent five years staying home with her children while doing accounting work on the side.
When she returned to work, it was as vice president of finance and operations for the International School of Indiana, a position she describes as “broader than pure accounting and finance.” There, she focused a lot of her time on facilities and logistics. Four years into the job, she was having lunch with a former colleague who recruited her for a position in business development, sales and client development with RGP, which helps companies fill manpower and expertise needs.
“Life is about changing and growing and continuing to explore,” Ackerman said. “It’s an adventure.”•
