Victoria Spartz became the state’s newest senator Wednesday after being sworn in to fill Sen. Luke Kenley’s former seat.

“I am eager to begin my first session with the General Assembly,” Spartz said in a written statement. “It is a privilege to be the voice of the constituents in Senate District 20, and I plan to work hard to make Indiana an even better place to call home.”

Kenley had chaired the Senate Committee on Appropriations since 2009 and was the architect of many state budgets. He retired at the end of September after 25 years as state senator.

Spartz defeated six other candidates in a caucus vote in September. She will finish the remainder of Kenley’s term, which ends in 2020.

During her acceptance speech, the Noblesville Republican said she has a desire to ensure limited government is the foundation of Hoosier policies, allowing for lower taxes and a free enterprise system.

Prior to becoming a state senator, Spartz served in financial leadership positions for Fortune 200 companies and was the chief financial officer of the Indiana Office of Attorney General.

She also sits on the 5th Congressional District Republican Central Committee, is part of Hamilton County Federated Republican Women, and serves as vice chairman of the Hamilton County Republican Party.
