The larger photo, taken in 1972 and looking northeast across downtown, shows construction of I-65 partly completed to the north, ending abruptly at what would become its north split with I-70. Land on the east side of downtown has been cleared for additional interstate construction. The smaller photo, taken in 1975 from the opposite direction, shows the north split nearly completed. The Indiana Department of Transportation is making plans now to rebuild the north split and some neighbors are advocating alternatives that could include removing the highways or reducing their footprints.
