Regarding your series on poverty, I completely agree there’s a gap and that it needs to be minimized. That said, I do also know there has always been, is, and always will be a gap in income, lifestyle and what life brings to a person.

How do we change things? That’s the question NO ONE can answer. New taxes? Send an email to Marc Benioff at Salesforce and ask him if his company (just his) would be willing to pay an “employee tax,” similar to the new one in Seattle, of let’s say maybe $200 per employee per year to go to poorer-than-average neighborhoods in Indianapolis. Bet his ultra-liberal attitude changes pretty quickly when you go for his pocket.

The gap is always going to be there—unless your go for absolute socialism (it’s been tried, it doesn’t work). Should it be minimized? Of course. But I believe it needs to start within, from restoring the “moral compass” that this society seems to have lost. New taxes never work. Government grants are nothing more than your money being used the same way as if they were new taxes.

Go back 60 years. What did the gap look like then? What’s changed? And what do we need to do to get back to it?
