Entering Las Vegas: About a year ago, Activate Healthcare, which puts primary care clinics inside or near businesses to help them control medical costs and give their employees ready access to care, opened a clinic in Las Vegas for the International Brotherhood of Electric Workers. Now, Activate is in the process of opening five more clinics in Nevada. “Because people like what they see and hear,” co-founder Peter Dunn said.
Going national: Activate also attributes its growth to becoming more of a national company. Co-founder Debra Geihsler said Activate is in 10 states now and expects to add as many as seven in the next year. “It always gets down to the basics—and that is the experience of focusing on the patient,” she said.
Happy doctors: Dunn said Activate is a win for employers, who can lower their medical costs, and for patients, who have easy access to health care. “But it’s also a win for providers,” he said. “In this new world of Activate Healthcare, doctors get to spend as much time with each patient as they need.” He said Activate’s doctors typically have a patient load that’s about a quarter of what a typical doctor would face. “They have regular hours; they’re paid well. In some ways, it’s like they moved to a new level of ability to care for their patients.”
Not only that: Activate doesn’t process insurance claims, so its doctors don’t have to deal with paperwork. “Their job is to take exceptional care of patients,” Dunn said. “They like taking care of the whole person and seeing the results,” Geihsler added.
Making improvements: Dunn said Activate is improving its model by adding new capabilities, including the technology for each clinic to track annual goals and manage patient incentives. In addition, some clinics are adding psychologists, and three California clinics will be adding dental services to go along with primary medical care. “We’re very excited about our opportunities to grow for a long time,” Dunn said.•
