Gov. Mitch Daniels is asking President Barack Obama to approve federal disaster aid for 14 central and southern Indiana counties that were damaged by heavy rains, high winds and flooding Aug. 4-5.

Daniels wants Obama to approve individual disaster aid for residents of Brown, Clark, Floyd, Franklin, Jackson, Jennings, Marion, Ripley and Rush counties. He asked for public assistance for Brown, Decatur, Floyd, Franklin, Jefferson, Jennings, Owen, Parke, Ripley and Switzerland counties. Public assistance would allow the governments and certain not-for-profits to seek reimbursement for part of the cost of debris removal and other services.

Up to 10 inches of rain fell over 23 hours in some spots, leading to damaging flash floods.
