Steele was a native of southern Indiana primarily known as a landscape artist with an interest in Impressionism. He was considered the dean of the Hoosier Group of artists and—with the sponsorship of German business interests in Indianapolis—went to Munich to study art. He returned to Indianapolis and then built a summer home and studio in Brown County called the House of the Singing Winds and would often paint in the prairies and woods near his home. As Steele became nationally known for his landscapes, a number of artists followed him to Brown County. Steele’s home and studio in Brown County is now a state historic site and open to visitors. This photo is thought to be from about 1915.
