Speakers at the rally included Hudnut, then-state Sen. Julia Carson and civil rights leader Thomas Brown. Operation Big Vote began as a national campaign launched in 1980 by 70 black organizations, including the NAACP, to try to encourage more minorities to vote in that year’s presidential race.
