Dammann’s Lawn, Garden & Landscaping Centers Inc. is closing its east-side store at 8005 E. 30th St. this weekend while its 4914 Rockville Road facility on the city’s west side remains open.

The 1.37-acre site was the original store for owners Jim Dammann Sr. and his wife, Helen, who opened the East 30th Street location 36 years ago.

When the Dammanns later opened their 10-acre Rockville Road store and growing facility, the east-side store became a satellite location.

“We’re just consolidating everything to our main location,” Dammann’s Landscape Designer and Grower Kathy Haley told IBJ. “As they [the Dammanns] get closer to retirement age, this just makes sense.”

The Dammanns sold a third nursery location, in Beech Grove, about a year ago to their son, Matt Dammann, Haley said. That operation, at 5129 S. Emerson Ave., is now a separate business known as Dammann’s Garden Co.

Sunday will be the last day of operation at the east-side store, Haley said.

The property has been sold to a nearby business, Backyard Blessings LLC, which is currently located at 8119 E. 30th St. Backyard Blessings installs and services ponds and water features.

“They wish the new owner the best,” Haley said of the property sale. “It gives him an opportunity to expand his business, and gave them [the Dammanns] an opportunity to focus on the larger of their two stores.”

IBJ was unable to reach Backyard Blessings on Friday morning for details about its plans for the property.
