Subscribe NowIn Curt Smith’s recent Forefront column [Kavanaugh vote was key to GOP’s keeping Senate, Nov. 16], he made several seemingly accurate post-election observations; however, I believe Smith’s personal bias may have caused him to miss a valid point.
The defeat of Republican State Sen. Mike Delph was not only about the demographics in his district. The vote was also about his RFRA stand and the voters’ opposition to his anti-equality platform. If it wasn’t, please explain District 30 Sen. John Ruckelshaus’s previous win in a district that includes the relatively same demographics. The simple fact is, until the Republican Party heeds the words of Gov. Eric Holcomb and supports statewide hate crimes legislation that protects ALL citizens, they will continue to lose seats in the Senate and the House. Our children and our grandchildren are taught to love one another equally. They, and we, deserve to live in a state that embraces and protects diversity and equality for all.
