Misty Weisensteiner, an economic-development executive who most recently worked in Orange County, is the new director of the Indiana Office of Tourism Development.

Lt. Gov. Suzanne Crouch announced the appointment Tuesday. Weisensteiner succeeds Mark Newman, who had been in the post six years when he stepped down in August to become executive director of Indiana Public Broadcasting Stations.

Weisensteiner, 41, spent 14 months as executive director of the Orange County Economic Development Corp. Before that, she served seven years as executive director of Orange County’s convention and visitors bureau, Visit French Lick West Baden.

“Misty’s impressive resume and career made her a front-runner immediately for the position,” Crouch said in a statement.

State officials say the Indiana tourism industry employs 186,000 Hoosiers and has an economic impact of nearly $12 billion a year.

Weisensteiner is taking the post at a time of transition for the Indiana Office of Tourism Development.

The General Assembly in 2017 created a task force to evaluate how tourism offices across the country operate and to consider changes to Indiana’s office. In October, the task force submitted its report—titled “Destination Indiana: Organizing an innovative and more impactful state tourism structure.”
