A new contract ratified by General Drivers, Warehousemen & Helpers Local 89 at Jeffboat LLC calls for an average wage increase of 11 percent over three years.

About 95 percent of 900 eligible Teamsters members voted in favor of the contract, according to Jeffboat parent American Commercial Lines Inc. The Ohio River shipyard, located in American Commercial Lines’ headquarters city of Jeffersonville, builds barges.

The company employs a total of 2,750, and generated $940 million in sales last year.

American Commercial Lines said earlier this year that it intends to hire 400 more Jeffboat workers.

Demand for barges is climbing, said Senior Vice President and CFO Chris Black, because many old barges are wearing out, and commodities commonly carried in barges—grain, coal, steel and ethanol—are booming.
