Rich Pegram, who suddenly left as general manager of WTHR-TV Channel 13 in November, has joined a Tampa, Fla., television station as vice president and general manager.

The Tampa station, WFTS-TV Channel 28, is owned by Cincinnati-based The E.W. Scripps Co. WTHR is owned by the Wolfe family of Columbus, Ohio.

“His trophy case is filled with the most prestigious awards in the industry, and he knows how to take share from competitors in the market,” Bill Peterson, senior vice president of the Scripps Television Station Group, said in a statement yesterday. “More importantly, his emphasis on high-quality local news and his belief in operating a powerful Internet business will make WFTS even more valuable to Tampa.”

Pegram, 56, was general manager at WTHR for 13 years. During his tenure, the station’s revenue tripled.

His departure came just prior to the crucial November ratings “sweeps,” and as the station’s main rival, WISH-TV Channel 8, was making gains in the ratings.

Pegram starts his new duties on May 28.
