Hiring has begun at the Getrag Corp. transmission plant north of Indianapolis, nearly a year after the German manufacturer announced plans to build the $530 million plant in Tipton County, reports the Kokomo Tribune.
So far, 19 salaried workers have been hired; two more are slated to come aboard by July 1. The plant is expected to open late 2009. It will employ 1,400 workers making fuel-efficient, dual-clutch transmissions.
The project is a partnership between Getrag and Chrysler LLC. Construction on the plant stalled in December because of a dispute between the partners. Work resumed in late February.
The plant, at U.S. 31 and State Road 28, was one of the largest economic development projects announced in the state last year.
