AM General, the Mishawaka company that makes Humvee military vehicles and the hulking Hummer sport-utility vehicle, says it’s about to sign an agreement to build the new Standard Taxi for Vehicle Production Group LLC of Troy, Mich.

Assembly could begin next year, according to the South Bend Tribune.

Prototypes generated by Vehicle Production Group are a boxy car with room for four people in the back seat. Ramps and large doors allow wheelchair access.

AM General officials would not discuss hiring levels needed to staff the line.

A Vehicle Production Group official told the newspaper that the northern Indiana manufacturer was chosen because of its expertise in building vehicles, parts procurement, engineering and other areas.

Vehicle Production Group was founded in 2006 by principals of the Tarrytown, N.Y., private investment firm Andlinger & Co. Inc. with major contributions from Patton Corrigan, a taxi fleet in Chicago.
