13 thoughts on “As AES Indiana abandons coal, capacity questions arise

  1. AES has a very limited delivery foot print. I suspect that the biggest impact on load in the Indy area will be EV charging. When I worked for AES, these plants would often be online selling power to the grid, meaning Indy rate payers were helping AES send up to $1 million a day in profits to the corporate office in Virginia. There is a ton of extra capacity that Indy rate payers don’t need to pay for.

    1. Electric vehicles do not necessitate additional capacity beyond what is already generated. Increased demand actually brings down prices, and people need cleaner air.

  2. Not only is coal “a dinosaur”, but it creates superfund sites with coal ash while distributing heavy metals, radioactive material, & carcinogens throughout the region. All this nasty stuff causes problems over time, and ultimately leading to worse health outcomes, higher heathcare costs, and even lower cognitive performance among children in school. Burning coal is one of the worst things that a community or state can do.

Natural gas does not help reduce the carbon footprint of energy production when you take gas leaks into account. But it’s miles better than coal.

In the long term, Indiana needs to get off fossil fuels completely, whether that means renewables & batteries, nuclear, or both. Even though the US has plenty of fossil fuels, using them does pose inherent national security concerns. Barring a government takeover of the means of production (such as if literal communism were implemented), US energy prices will continue to dictated by the global market and the bad actors until we stop using fossil fuels.

In the meantime, we should question why the IEDC keeps incentivizing data centers & the like. These types of facilitates use a ton of energy & have very few on-site employees. It does not make sense to keep subsidizing datacenters unless the State’s goal is to support the construction industry (which can be done in other ways) or to keep us on fossil fuels for as long as possible (which is bad policy). Maybe only give subsidies to datacenters if they can produce their own power in a clean way.

  3. “We believe this project does not add capacity to the grid,” said Jon Ford – maybe Jon should think about the environment!! LESS pollution is just as important as power.

    1. Come back to us when your air conditioner does not work in the summer due to lack of capacity. Also talk to California.

  4. I’d hope that nuclear would be part of a solution. Purdue University is adding a “small reactor” near their campus.

AES could get the approval in the future if they had a few hundred acres. Community support could be possible if AES were to offer zero cost electricity to any homeowner within a defined area (Ex: 10 mile radius).

Nuclear is safe. The industry is not having Three Mile Island meltdowns. (Although Jack Lemmon was great in the movie).

  5. Every one should read Dr. Steven Koonin’s book, Unsettled: What Climate Science Tells Us, What It Doesn’t, and Why It Matters. Koonin is a MIT trained physicist and was Obama’s Under Secretary of Energy. His book will change how you view what climate change is and fossil fuel’s impact.

  6. Why we are not investing in nuclear energy for baseload nationwide is entirely beyond me. Yes, it’s not as cheap as spinning a turbine with natural gas, but it can be highly reliable. With the transition towards EV’s and climate change wreaking havoc everywhere, it seems like the logical choice.
