The absurd pursuit of diversity has gifted millions of mediocre students with piles of non-dischargeable debt and degrees most employers wouldn’t look at, but it has kept a lot of 2nd and 3rd tier university administrators employed. Maybe diversity as an end in itself shouldn’t be the goal when it comes to higher education.
I agree that we have a college debt problem in America, but it is not caused by the pursuit of diversity. Nor have college affirmative action programs caused anyone to pursue unmarketable degrees. But we are never going to be able to level the playing field of opportunity in this country without proactively working toward diversity. We’ve had too many generations and centuries of inequity. The real problem is, lots of Americans prefer to continue the inequity forever.

When will we know when we’ve achieved the right degree of diversity? What’s the benchmark?
How about the benchmark for “equity”? Do we need to get our Gini index below that of Sweden? Considering that Sweden now has a large and completely disaffected Muslim underclass, that might not be such a hard feet. But then, if we sufficiently redistribute our wealth to that level and people still think life isn’t fair, what will our new benchmark be? Cuba? The Democratic Republic of North Korea?
How long do we have to continue to hold some demographic subgroups to lower standards and think that this is going to help their self-esteem, knowing they got admitted to schools based on quotas rather than aptitude? Meanwhile, how much longer do we have to deny other subgroups these opportunities despite the fact that they worked hard and demonstrated talent, before those high-achieving subgroups say “screw it” and look for ways to maneuver around a system rigged in their disfavor? How long can we expect to continue producing talented astrophysicists, cardiologists, or even commercial airplane pilots if we continue downplaying merit for other qualifying features, like melanin, gonads, or ability to parrot the party orthodoxy?
I at least commend this article’s attempt to present the negative consequences of AA. But it’s fascinating hearing supposedly “neutral, non-partisan” sites like Associated Press give wind to laughable neologisms like “microaggressions” with no pushback. And this quote is hilarious: “If affirmative action is struck down, colleges fear they will unknowingly admit fewer students of color.” They’re tacitly admitting they don’t think “students of color” are good enough to get in any other way.

Diversity does not those from historical disadvantaged groups if they
are not prepared and can not meet the standards.
The extreme policies and push for diversity usually displaces a more
qualified applicant. Most times it displaces a more qualified Asian
Diversity representative of the population is not a bad pursuit, it makes sense.
That said, the solution is not really AA, but ensuring there is more equality in the level of education from the ground up. The fact is that where you go to school has a big impact on outcome. There are plenty of studies that show underprivileged students who are given the opportunity to experience a higher quality of education have similar outcomes to their peers in that new environment.
That is the fact that some will refuse to believe and where the bigger social problem exists.
