Sounds like a lot of special interest support for this fund. Maybe I missed it, but I didn’t see anywhere in the story about how it’s going to be funded – – is this going to be a new tax on the hard-working, Hoosier taxpayers who have already been hit with record high inflation and rising product and service cost? Is it going to come from IEDC? From the state office of tourism? Is this going to just be a reallocation of existing funds into the bid fund? IBJ – wake up and do some real, deep-dive journalism.
And how will the actual taxpayer benefit from their money being used for this? We all know how the businesses are going to benefit. It’s going to drive in mass volume of customers. But how does the actual everyday, working Hoosier truly benefit from this? When they go to sporting events, they have to pay a tax on the ticket they buy — so with this fund, they’d be paying tax on top of the tax to attract these events.
And of course, Indiana was going to fall behind, particularly Indianapolis, in competing with Florida during the pandemic. Florida’s been open for business as usual for 18 months — in a warm climate. Florida has been a much more stable business environment to bet on than Indianapolis has during the pandemic. That’s a matter of administrative decision making, not the lack of a bid fund.
Seems like a bill that panders to the corporate political donor and special interest. This is bad policy, as explained in this article.
How about offering potential conventioneers a safe, secure downtown, rather than a city they can read about having yet another record year for homicides? Just sayin’…
