Genius! Who would have guessed that building the president a new residence would have such a profound and positive impact on teaching and preparing students for the future. Such a great investment to offer the best value to students.
NIMBY
Very disappointing. Surely there are already locations on Butler’s campus that are suitable for “hosting fundraising and other community events” (and do we really think that the house will be used for “community events”?). I suggest President Danko look to Warren Buffet’s example.
Use 4 mil for a house? You can tell their priorities are. And it isn’t the students or even benefiting the college in any way. Who cares that the president has a LAVISH home? This sure is not going to impress anybody to go to college there. How discouraging. I’m sure Butler needs a lot more things than a house. I had always been impressed with Butler. But not after this move.
If we need any further evidence that higher ed has become a cartel of institutions intended to serve, elevate, and buttress the interests of the elite, look no further than this move. Like Alan G said, we all know those “other community events” will be exclusive gatherings with four-digit per-person tickets to serve as thank-yous to other deep-pocketed alums.
Worst of all: Butler U is still LESS of an offender than most other similarly sized private institutions.
Why can’t they just purchase and refurbish the Dolphin Mansion on Kessler Boulevard? It’s not too far away, and it can definitely host lots of community events.
