Carmel’s Aaron Shackell made the finals in the 400-meter freestyle at the U.S. Olympics in Paris but did not win a medal.

Shackell, 19, the only American in the first swimming final of the Paris competition, finished eighth in his first Olympics on Saturday.

Shackell won the 400 freestyle at the Olympic Trials in June in Indianapolis. His sister, Alex Shackell, also qualified for the U.S. Olympic team and will be competing in the women’s 200m butterfly.

In the 400 men’s freestyle, the gold medal went to Germany’s Lukas Märtens, the silver to Australia’s Elijah Winnington and the bronze to South Korea’s Kim Woo-Min.

In the 400-meter women’s 400-meter freestyle, Australia’s Ariarne Titmus won gold, Canada’s Summer McIntosh won silver and U.S. swimmer Katie Ledecky won bronze.
