Single-family building permit filings in the nine-county Indianapolis area jumped 9% in August, marking the 12th time in the last 14 months that filings have risen on a year-over-year basis.
Builders filed 768 permits last month, compared with 702 permits in August 2019, according to the latest numbers by the Builders Association of Greater Indianapolis.
Permit filings are up 12% so far this year compared with the first eight months of 2019, despite the pandemic.
August’s increase followed a 12% year-over-year rise in June, a 20% jump in June, a 12% decline in May, a 5% increase in April, a 20% rise in March, a 34% escalation in February and an 18% jump in January.
August’s numbers got a boost from bursts of business in Hendricks, Hancock and Shelby counties.
County numbers
Marion County permit filings fell 5% in August on a year-over-year basis, from 135 to 128.
Hamilton County saw 224 filings last month, down 5%.
Hendricks County’s numbers were up 28%, from 98 to 125.
Hancock County saw permits jump 32%, to 75.
Johnson County saw a 10% increase last month, to 68.
Filings dipped 2% in Boone County last month, to 60.
Madison County filings increased 200%, to 45.
Filings jumped from three to 25 in Shelby County.
Morgan County filings dropped 47%, to 18.
