    1. And they will get it because they’ve bought and paid for legislators to give that money to them.

That’s an adorable stat that charter schools do just a small amount better on test results. Given they can pick and choose who they admit and leave the “tough cases” for public schools, it’d amazing that’s all the better they can do.

Just wait until they’re done with “fixing” diplomas and most public schools can’t afford to educate students to the admission standards of Indiana’s public universities.

  1. Let’s break this down:

They call themselves public schools, but they’re not. When they have the same budget/legal requirements as public schools, then they can call themselves public schools.

    But, beside that point:

Not one more dollar form the public school fund. If the legislature wants to establish a separate fund for charters, fine.

  2. Figure out your own revenue generating model if you wanted to go into education so bad. This stinks overall. Its so effing annoying.
First – unused school properties can’t go to an auction to recoup as much of taxpayer investment over the years into that publicly funded structure. No, we have to give it away for a $1 to a competitor. Sweet Deal for them, sucks for taxpayers.
Second – now any public school referendum that the voters of that districts decides to increase taxes for teachers or buildings, ~1% of that referndum request has to be siphoned off for Charters within that district. Even sweeter deal, but a loss of tax payer dollars that was voted on.
Third – and probably won’t be the last from these public taxpayer teet suckers – they want to take a portion of our property tax revenue that has already been siphoned off left, right, up, down, and all around to every other taxing authority. The Sweetest deal of all for the charters – not tax payers.

At some point these republicans are going to have to raise our taxes if they keep siphoning off to all their cronies!

  3. This one-sided story should embarrass its writer. How about a quote or two from someone who supports traditional public schools and opposes these flakes and predators taking over our state’s education system?

    1. Zero embarrassment from the “journalists”. IBJ is Indy’s version of The View. They know their target audience.

    2. Not true. This story is not by an IBJ reporter. IBJ is as fair-minded a news organization as you will find in the modern landscape.

  4. I have an idea…let’s not use a national survey from the University of Arkansas. Let’s have IU or Purdue or Ball State or Indiana State run a survey of Indiana students and Indiana results. Let’s see what the taxpayers are getting for our money here in Indiana. Then let’s talk about re-assigning funds from public schools to these “not for profit” profit seeking ventures.

    1. How convenient that The Powers That Be have forgotten the tens of millions of TAXPAYER dollars stolen by the online charter school fraudsters fronted by a formerly reputable school superintendent (and smaller amounts siphoned off for high living by in-person for-profit “charter school” operators).

    2. Total lack of accountability for funds and performance now, and the solution is “let’s give them MORE tax dollars”???
