  1. “…80% of inmates had substance abuse problems and 30% to 40% of inmates were experiencing substantial mental health concerns.”

How can we be the “land of the free” when we incarcerate more people than any other country in the world? Jail is obviously not the answer for dealing with non-violent offenders with substance abuse or mental health problems. All it does is make it very difficult for these people to find jobs later on, disenfranchise them, and make their problems worse. And then we wonder why recidivism is so high in this country. Public safety in this country needs to be much less punitive in nature. Our criminal justice system provides justice for nobody and is a national embarrassment.

I hope that our new criminal justice center can will make the system more proactive and effective. It’s going to take a lot of work to undo all the damage that has been done since the 70s.

    1. Nicholas, but that would mean taking responsibility for one’s actions and we can’t have that. Everything is always someone else’s fault and not the offenders.
