19 thoughts on “Could 2022 be the year for marijuana legalization in Indiana?

  1. The state is missing out on millions of dollars by not legalizing a drug that is far less harmful than cigarettes or alcohol. It also will help decrease inmates in the overpopulated jail system. Legalize it already!

  2. Legislators prefer the “sins” of the good old days, like gambling. Or is it that unlike gambling, marijuana advocates don’t have the big money to contribute to legislators campaigns? Makes you wonder…

  3. This is just one of many examples of Indiana politicians using their so called religious and moral beliefs to govern others. To be honest its the hypocrisy of it all that makes Indiana look backwards and stuck in the Mayberry days.Pathetic and the very reason Indiana is always playing catch up and left behind by its peer cities.

  4. Would be a hell of a cash crop for Indiana. And maybe make driving through the countryside a little less monotonous with something besides corn and soybeans to look at.

  5. I only worry about impaired drivers. Theirs already too many accidents from alcohol or distracted (cell phone) driving. Lets add another legally accepted drug to the list. Of course you shouldn’t drive while high, but people will. I agree though it shouldn’t be illegal just because some people will abuse it. I would love to see the facts about accidents in States where they have legalized it. Better, worse or about the same?

  6. It is a bad idea all the way around if the reasons being cited are all that the pro-legalization group can come up with. Just because other states have done it does not mean that we should legalize marijuana. Just because there are people who have been arrested for possession and the jails are overcrowded does not mean that it should be legalized. Just because the state could take in more revenue through the sale of the drug is not a good reason either. I am trying hard to see the other side’s point of view but have not yet seen one single good reason for the legalization of marijuana. And after researching the whole issue I read this article that appeared in the Indianapolis Star in Sept. You can read it and form your own opinion but it was to me a powerful warning about the slippery slope legalizing such a hazardous drug would have for the citizens of Indiana. Here is the link: https://www.usatoday.com/story/news/nation/2019/09/20/indiana-boy-17-died-smoking-weed-chs-blame-what-chs/2387571001/

    1. Great story Joe and a reminder of how potent today’s marijuana is and can be. Probably need to stop comparing it with the good old days because this is a much stronger and more dangerous product.

  7. My concern is impaired drivers. How many times do you see someone smoking and driving in Indianapolis? Unfortunately, way too often.
While riding a motorcycle, honestly at at least 75% of the city’s intersections while stopped, I can smell burning marijuana. That means there is an intoxicated driver around us regularly. Someone who is choosing to drive intoxicated and put others at risk vs use in their own how or other safe place.
I too would like to see accident and traffic death stats from states who have legalized it. My fear is they have probably skyrocketed from marijuana impaired driving.

Adult use of Marijuana is not the problem. It’s irresponsible use is.
    (Just one guys opinion)

  8. Since legalizing cannabis; Colorado has reduced traffic fatalities, dramatically reduced death by opioid overdose, reduced youth use, and has a surplus tax revenues. The healthiest state per capita…. https://norml.org/ has all the data per state. Stop guessing and just scroll through the list of articles.
Most adults in America poll they would prefer to live in a state has legalized marijuana. As a past long time resident of Indiana, I now live in Arizona and am interested in how many seniors and over 40 people at the dispensaries I see. It demonstrates the demand for alternatives to; pain treatments, sleep aids, and therapies for many medical conditions not to mention as an alternative to alcohol which is responsible for so much social disfunction, violence and poor health in our society. Indiana residents might surprise the politicians if they would grow spines and take a position. Good luck and Go Hoosiers!

  9. Back when I was young I smoked weed only once…..from 1972 to 1983. But seriously, keeping it illegal is stupid and a wasteful use of law enforcement resources, not to mention destroying lives of casual users. Indiana could legalize it and not get into the dispensary business. Illinois, Michigan and other states will be only too happy to continue collecting the multiple millions that Hoosiers are already spending on weed in those states.

  10. Legalization and decriminalization would be a huge blow to the illicit drug trade and a big win for taxpayers (taxable goods, reduced enforcement resources being dedicated to marijuana, and improved public health/reduction in tobacco and alcohol abuse). There’s really no downside.

  11. Indiana is rarely progressive or cutting edge, so it won’t legalize marijuana until at least 45 other states do. And when it does, it will be the same cast of politically connected characters who will get the licenses to grow and dispense, and will become only wealthier. Many former politicos with money are just champing at the bit to get in line to sell dope in Indiana!
