The Indiana State Department of Health on Sunday reported 1,844 new COVID-19 cases, the smallest number of new cases in more than two months, as testing hit its lowest mark since Sept. 8.

The daily case count hasn’t been so low since Oct. 21, when 1,766 cases were reported.

The department said 4,792 new individuals had been tested, ending a streak of 61 straight days in which testing in that category had exceeded 10,000.

Sunday’s report consisted of cases and testing reported to the health department on the day after Christmas Day.

The department also reported 35 more deaths, marking the 26th consecutive day that deaths have exceeded 25 in the daily report.

Statewide hospitalizations due to COVID-19 increased slightly, from 2,808 on Christmas Day to 2,811 on Saturday. The high mark was 3,460 set on Nov. 30.

COVID-19 patients occupy 29.9% of the state’s intensive care beds and non-COVID patients are taking up 42.5%, leaving 27.6% available.

The 7-day positivity rate for unique individuals was 23.5%.
