A subsidiary of Portland, Oregon-based Daimler Truck North America is planning to close its remanufacturing plant in Plainfield by the end of the year.

In a notice to the state, Detroit Diesel Remanufacturing LLC said the closure will affect a total of 80 workers, the first of which are expected to be laid off next month.

Detroit Diesel said the decision was made as part of a consolidation of its remanufacturing operations footprint. In a statement to WXIN-TV Channel 59 in Indianapolis, the company said the operations will be split between its locations in Ohio and Minnesota.

The company remanufactures a variety of automotive components, including engine components, axle carriers, transmissions and turbochargers, according to its website.

The first 15 employees are expected to be laid off beginning Aug. 17, the company said in a WARN notice filed with the Indiana Department of Workforce Development.

The entire plant is slated for closure by Dec. 31, with additional WARN notices expected to be filed as more layoffs are conducted.

The affected employees are not represented by a union and do not have bumping rights. Detroit Diesel said in its statement that it would provide assistance to the workers, including “relocation of eligible employees for other positions within the company, job placement services, or severance packages.”

Officials with Daimler Truck North America did not respond to multiple requests for more information.
