If you think they are in anyway prepared for these data centers, you have no understanding about what is happening behind the scenes.
MISO has also forecasted that it is unable to handle normal peak loads.
And transferring money allocated for transmission upgrades to these projects is derelict.
These data centers are only going to make our situation worse.
So long as any new data center is the first thing to be load-shed in the event of any issues, and that their entire roof is covered in solar panels, I have no issue.
I doubt that VPP is in the discussions with these companies.

Building new grid capacity is PAST DUE in Indiana (and the U.S. as a whole). If design started today, it would be 2 years before a shovel is in the ground and 6 years before a new base load capacity plant comes online. State demand from data centers, electric vehicles, advanced manufacturing, and homes is only increasing with the success of IEDC’s efforts. DONT SLOW DOWN IEDC, our state needs your continued efforts.
Indiana Utilites must invest in adding base load capacity, planning for a mixed/balanced response, using fossil fuels (maintaining investment in cleaner coal of existing plants in the state, and new natural gas base load capacity) and in increasingly reliable renewables – chiefly wind, then less popular, solar.
Utility critics (in this case Power, but also in state Water resources) need to stop being roadblocks to inevitable progress for our state and work to support utilities, and the IURC to “sell” wind, solar, and water capital investment projects to landowners in the state. What progress results from lawsuits? Collaborate with the utilities and state leaders (both public and private) to be a part of the future and guide the discussion to a reasonable, balanced solution. Filing a lawsuit is the quickest way to be removed from the discussion to the solution.
The economic progress of our state can align with reasonable environmental causes. God knows I want my great grandkids to be able to breathe the air, enjoy a mild summer day, and drink non-PFAS polluted water, but I also know burying my head in the cause against progress is not a solution. Perhaps our kids engineer the solutions, using advanced computer models – from the very data centers critics are attempting to block.
If adding a few large electrical users strains the capacity that our state has, how in the world will it handle the volume of EV’s that Washington is trying to jam down our throats?
Picture a completely jammed I-465 on a Friday rush hour and 80% of those need to be recharged. Yikes.
