Sanders, a Pro Football Hall of Famer and former Jackson State University coach, has transformed Colorado from a struggling football program to a highly rated TV attraction during his first seven games as head coach. The team’s record is 4-3, including an upset win against national championship runner-up Texas Christian University.
Steward Speakers, an initiative to bring Black leaders to Indianapolis founded in 1986, announced Sanders’ appearance on Tuesday. In past years, the speakers series has showcased high-profile visitors such as Viola Davis, Steve Harvey and Phylicia Rashad.
“We are excited to be the vehicle that brings ‘Coach Prime’ to Indianapolis, supporting our mission to bring attention to issues that impact our community,” said Matthew Steward, president and founder of Steward Speakers, in a written statement.
The upcoming Steward Speakers season is titled “Sports & Education and the Impact on the African American community.”
Before Sanders appears at Lucas Oil Stadium, fellow Hall of Famer Shannon Sharpe will speak Feb. 22 at Warren High School Performing Arts Center and three-time Olympic gold medalist Jackie Joyner-Kersee will speak March 21 at the NCAA Hall of Champions.
